The Caledonian Canal, situated right next to the hotel, runs from Corpach, Fort William in the West Coast to Inverness, in the East Coast, for some 60 miles. It was constructed in the early 19th century by engineer, Thomas Telford. Only 1/3 of the canal is man-made with the rest made up of Loch Dochfour, Loch Ness, Loch Oich, and Loch Lochy. Neptune’s Staircase is located right outside the hotel and consists of 8 Locks lifting boats some 64 ft. It is the longest system in Britain and takes on average around 90 minutes to pass through.
